My electronics lab is inside my office at home. It’s very convenient for the occasional hacking electronics project. Still, I do a lot of soldering, and breathing those solder fumes in a closed space isn’t very healthy, especially during winter when the windows are all closed.

Home labs are so prevalent now that brands are paying attention; fume extractors are no longer expensive. But what’s the fun in buying when I can build my own?

The computers that I write about on this blog are mostly machines that I owned when I was younger. That changes today. Over the last few months, I’ve been slowly taking free time to work on a machine that I never owned (or could have; they weren’t sold outside the UK), an Acorn Archimedes A3020.

What’s special about this computer to me is its historical relevance. It runs on one of the first ARM RISC processors. More specifically, it runs an ARM 250, a system-on-chip that includes the 32-bit ARM3 core, along with memory and I/O controllers.

I’ve been considering adding a chip tester to my lab for some time now, but I’ve never quite taken the plunge. BackBit, whom I know well because I have a BackBit Pro cartridge that I use to load software onto my 8-bit computers, has the Chip Tester Pro V2. I was close to buying one, but I found it somewhat expensive, and importing it from the US didn’t help, so I waited.

RGB is not analog, we need more colors

First, I found that the 6-way IDC analog RGB extender that I used with the RGB2HDMI adapter wasn’t detecting all the colors. Specifically I wasn’t seeing the half bright variant of the 3-bit 8 color palette.

I talk a lot about Commodore machines in this blog; they left a bigger dent in me growing up, but like most kids of my generation living in Portugal in the 80s, the first computers I played with were actually Sinclairs—first my friend’s ZX81 and then a ZX Spectrum 48K that my parents offered me. I have many memories of playing games like the Horace series, Manic Miner, Jetpac, or Chuckie Egg on my Spectrum.

I’m on a roll upgrading the Amiga 1000. This time, I replaced the PSU fan.

The Amiga 1000 PSU uses an ETRI Model 126LH metallic fan that is AC-powered 220/110V. These fans are pretty good, silent, reliable, and used in computers and industrial-grade equipment. However, they all suffer from a common problem: after long years of continuous use, the fan bearing starts developing an annoying grinding noise due to a lack of lubrication. This is a well-known issue for Amiga 1000 users, and I mentioned that mine also had the same problem in another post.

On my last post “the first perfect computer” I mentioned that I wasn’t done with the A1000. I finally upgraded it with an internal RGB2HDMI adapter.

For those unfamiliar with RGB2HDMI, it’s a brilliant and affordable open-source project that converts “digital” RGB video signals from vintage computers into crystal clear HDMI video with very low latency. At its core, there’s a combination of a RaspberryPi Zero running bare-metal code and a CPLD (complex programmable logic device) programmed to do level shifting and pixel sampling on the TTL RGB outputs from a vintage computer and feed the processed data into the Pi’s GPIO pins.

This is a story about restoring and upgrading a Commodore Amiga 1000, the first model of the Amiga series.

Many of you might be familiar with the popular Amiga 500 or later models, but the Commodore Amiga 1000 was actually the first model of the Amiga series produced.

I consider the A1000 a significant piece of home computing history. Arguably one of the most important machines of the 16-bit revolution period, considered by many to be the first multimedia computer, it marked the beginning of Commodore’s last cycle, after the huge success of the C64, in the history of personal computing.

The CP/M, short for Control Program/Monitor, was one of the first operating systems of the personal computer revolution. It was launched in 1974, and it celebrates 50 years this year. It was ported and made available for many 8-bit machines with different CPUs and was related to running productivity software. If you ever used CP/M, then, well, I hate to say it, but you’re old.

I had a brief encounter with CP/M when I was 14 or 15 years old; I can’t remember exactly. At the time, I was in high school in Aveiro, and the local computer shop, which I visited daily on my way to the train station, just to stare at the window, the same way a pilgrim would visit and contemplate at a shrine, had two beautiful machines on display: the brand-new Amiga 1000 and a C128D.

The C128 is a fascinating and unusual machine. It was the last 8-bit Commodore machine before the Amiga and co-existed with the C64 series for a while. They sold ~8 million units worldwide (vs ~17 million C64). I never owned one, but I fondly remember playing with one at my friend’s place and seeing them in computer shops.

It’s ~~fully~~ 99.8% backward compatible with its predecessor in C64 mode, but in native C128 mode it takes advantage of its 128 KB RAM, higher clocked 2 MHz 6510 variant (the 8502), and the improved VIC-IIe graphics chip.

Filipe Cruz (aka psenough) invited me to Inércia 2023, a local Demoscene event organized by the Associação Inércia that took place in the infamous Incrível Almadense. I’ve done my fair share of bouncing ball assembly demos in the 80s and others more recently, but I don’t qualify as a demoscener, not even by the lowest standards. Still, I promptly accepted the invitation. I participated in a panel that discussed the struggles and strategies of organizing community events. Then, later in the evening, I told the story about why and how I built my Frankenstein 64. There is some interception between retrocomputing and the demoscene, so it made sense.

It’s no secret that I love fiddling with retro computers, especially those I owned when I was a kid. This is the workflow I had in mind:

I can test things locally before going live.
When done, I git add the new post to my repo, then push it to Github.
Website gets burned to static files.
Website is published to the cloud at Cloudflare.
I get a success/failure notification in my Telegram.
Done, it’s live.

My goal was to fully automate this sequence of events.

This is a pure 6510 assembly program for the Commodore 64 made by Bright Pixel in 2019, because why not.

The C64 was a famous 8-bit machine in the 80s and the highest-selling single computer model ever.

Its hardware and architecture set it appart from other 8-bit personal computers at the time. Unlike most of the others, the C64 had dedicated advanced MOS chips for graphics and sprites (the VIC-II), sound (the SID), I/O (the CIA), and many others.

As part of our T-shirt challenge this year at Pixels Camp, we decided that one of the steps would require the hunter to access some sort of retro-computer in the venue, enter some secret codes, and get the instructions for the next step, if successful. As some of you know, I’m a sucker for all things 8-bit. I had multiple Spectrum and C64 machines in my youth (still own a few today) and at that age, I was somewhat proficient at BASIC, Z80 and 6510 assembly code. I remember the days when all we had were the occasional programming magazine in the kiosk and the help of our close-by IRL friends. There was no Internet, no online PDFs, nothing. Access to information was expensive and scarce.

I have a boat

Since I left SAPO last year, after an almost exactly 20-year incredible ride, many have been asking me to talk and share on what went good and bad with my career. I guess I’m now seen as the old experienced business guy with grizzled hair who went through a shitload of problems, was able to overcome some, and can probably provide inspirational insights to the next generations. Kind of sad, in a way. It’s either this or they just think I’m a good entertainer.

Celso and SAPO are ‘finito’

Este é o momento em que deixo o SAPO, o projeto que ajudei a criar há 20 anos nas catacumbas da Universidade de Aveiro juntamente com o Junior, o Hélder, o Sérgio, o João Luís e o “Cooker”.

No dia 23 de Outubro de 2015, por volta das 18 horas, apresentei a minha carta de demissão ao presidente executivo da PT Portugal. Antes disso, mais precisamente no dia 4 de Setembro, dia do vigésimo aniversário do SAPO, por motivos que por pudor provavelmente nunca relatarei, tomei em consciência a decisão de o fazer. Horas antes cantava os parabéns com a equipa e apagava as velas do bolo em cima do coreto na Praça José Fontana. Fi-lo com um sorriso postiço, danado com o que o destino me tinha reservado para este dia de celebração. Finalmente entendi, em plenitude, o que era a tal solidão da liderança de que os outros me falavam.

A passagem em conselho de ministros da nova lei da cópia privada e consequente próxima muito provável aprovação na assembleia deixou-me muito pouco surpreendido hoje. Enojado, triste, decepcionado mais uma vez com os meus representantes políticos sim, mas não admirado. À terceira é de vez, dizem, especialmente quando à terceira se junta a larga experiência de quem sabe bem que a melhor maneira de fazer passar estas coisas é de fininho, na altura certa, durante Agosto quando país está a banhos, evidentemente, minimizando assim o risco de que o barulho e influência da opinião pública e mais uns quantos que até podiam fazer alguma coisa se traduza no que quer que seja que impeça a sua aprovação. Tiro-lhes o chapéu pela estratégia e inteligência (não é sarcasmo).

E de repente veio a glória, convidavam-te para palestras na FCCN, davas entrevistas na rádio, e tenho uma vaga ideia de até te ter visto num programa da Praça da Alegria com o Manuel Goucha, não me lembro bem. Enfim, eras um batráquio presunçoso insuportável, era o que era.

So, you know I’m a sucker for vintage computing. I’ve been a proud owner of an original C64, an Amiga 1200, an Atari 130 XE, and a ZX-81, and a bunch of old peripherals and hacks that connect to them all in working condition.

But today I got in the mail one very special rarity. It’s an original, unopened, white, brand new, from the warehouse, Amiga 1200 Magic edition sold to me directly by no less than the legendary ex president of Amiga Technologies Petro Tyschtschenko.

Aproximam-se dois eventos que devo mencionar para os quais fui convidado a exortar sobre certos e determinados temas.

Curiosamente e para variar, em ambos elaborarei não sobre SAPO, tecnologia, empreendedorismo ou balões mas sim sobre temáticas radicalmente diferentes. Temos tudo para que corra mal, portanto. Agrada-me.

Primeiro, o TEDxIST, organizado por alunos do Instituto Superior Técnico para falar sobre… coisas que estão a acontecer nas quais eu acredito muito.

Segundo, World Failurists Congress, um conceito de conferência absolutamente novo e original que gira à volta de uma característica importantíssima sempre presente em qualquer caso de sucesso, uma em que aparentemente me reconhecem muita experiência: o redondo falhanço. Reza que o meu nome foi sugerido pelos que que trabalham diretamente comigo, não sei.

The Raspberry Pi has been used all over the world as an excellent emulator box to resuscitate old arcade machines, but with moderate success.

You see, if you’re a truly arcade aficionado like me, then you’ll aim for perfection. And perfection means you’ll use the jamma connector and the old 15Khz CRT instead of a more modern retro fitted VGA monitor like most people opt to do.

Old arcade CRT sets can only accept 15Khz horizontal frequencies using separate RGB signals and a sync line (well, not quite, there are 25 Khz monitors too but they’re uncommon). Ultimarc has an excellent article about arcade monitors if you want more details.

Ultimaker 3D printer timelapse

So, recently I became a member of the home 3D printers early starters community and got myself an Ultimaker.

I thought I’d do a time-lapse video of the whole assembly process, including the first 3D print.

It took me 3 days to complete the building instructions but the result is pretty awesome.

Congratulations to the Ultimaker team for making such a wonderful machine and putting together such great documentation, I still think it’s a miracle this thing actually printed an almost perfect black cube at the first attempt.

Há projectos que são invulgares pela motivação que geram nas equipas e nas organizações. São raros e curiosamente surgem fora dos nossos planos tradicionais e lineares, fora das visões condicionadas, dos retiros e dos brainstorms.

Há um ano atrás uma pequena equipa tentou vender-me um conceito de um projecto que lhes surgiu espontaneamente. Agarram-me em 10 minutos. Em poucos dias tiveram a energia suficiente para estruturar essa ideia para que juntos conseguíssemos mobilizar todas as áreas da organização necessárias para concretizar essa visão, e semanas depois o projecto era aprovado e apoiado ao mais alto nível pelo grupo aonde trabalhamos.

A SPA, claramente pressionada pela péssima opinião pública que esta proposta de lei está a gerar, publicou um documento intitulado “10 coisas que deveria saber sobre a Lei da Cópia Privada“.

Apetece-me desmanchar ponto por ponto deste argumentário barato e manipulativo, mas seria um desperdício do meu tempo, da minha inteligência e da minha energia se o fizesse já.

Mas há aqui uma grande conclusão que é preciso mencionar imediatamente.

Andei a matutar nas receitas que a PL118 conseguiria gerar nos moldes em que está a ser proposta.

Decidi arregaçar as mangas e fazer umas contas de merceeiro com os dados que consegui arranjar.

Para não correr muitos riscos decidi ser extremamente conservador. Estas são as premissas que usei:

Fiz duas análises, uma para 2012 e outra para 2014. O objetivo era provar que os cálculos propostos são absurdos e desproporcionais em relação à evolução da realidade.
Estou a assumir que o mercado vai estar estagnado até 2014 e a venda de PCs, discos rígidos e telemóveis não vai aumentar.
Não encontrei forecasts fiáveis sobre a venda de consolas de jogos, MP3 players (ie: iPods) e outros aparelhos que incluem memórias (ie: iPads), e portanto ignorei por completo estas receitas, devem ser uma fatia grande.
Não inclui todos os dispositivos e suportes, nomeadamente ~~as impressoras, os CDs e os DVDs.~~ os analógicos.
Assumo que a penetração de telemóveis com uma memória de armazenamento vai passar de 50% para 80%.
Assumo, conservadoramente, que o tamanho médio de um disco rígido externo, interno ou incluído num computador novo é de 600GB este ano (dados fiáveis) e que será de 2T em 2014 (A lei de moore adaptada aos HDDs diz que será mais).

A folha de cálculo pode ser vista aqui, para que não sobrem dúvidas.

Como já foi amplamente exposto esta lei peca também por ter inúmeras incorrecções técnicas e por estar desligada da realidade industrial. Uma das premissas em que esta lei é baseada é falsa e ofensiva e mostra que quem redigiu esta proposta foram, das duas uma, pessoas de boa fé com um desconhecimento total do que estão a falar ou então pessoas que percebem muito bem o que estão a fazer. Eu acredito na primeira, mas nos dois casos é muito grave.

Qual é afinal a posição pública dos artistas Portugueses em relação a esta indiscritível Proposta de Lei 118 apresentada pelo PS e apoiada por todos os partidos políticos?

Já todos percebemos que o princípio do fundo de compensação artistas é discutível, mas acima de tudo que e a implementação proposta é completamente imbecil, desajustada, mal feita, retrógrada, desligada da realidade actual, redigida por um lóbi não representativo de todos os interesses nacionais, certamente não dos interesses dos consumidores, e acima de tudo imoral. Também já percebemos todos que o objectivo supremo desta alteração, chamemos-lhe assim, é criar um fundo chorudo para dar novamente vida a uma, e passo a citar, “entidade gestora das compensações mandatada e legitimada para proceder à cobrança, gestão e distribuição”, vulgo SPA, sociedade portuguesa de autores, assumo.

A propósito das alternativas para o consumidor caso esta lei seja aprovada.

O português não tem grande pachorra para travar lutas por questões de princípio. Dá muito trabalho. A nossa primeira reacção, não fossemos nós os mestres da escapatória, de resto até temos uma palavra para descrever esta virtude cultural, foi a de imaginar que fugiríamos a estas taxas absurdas comprando o nosso equipamento em lojas online como é o caso da Amazon UK/DE. Ainda por cima até já têm entrega gratuita para Portugal. Problema resolvido. Belo.

Once in a while at SAPO we cross our path with extraordinary people with uncommon ideas and unlimited motivation. Ideas to which we just can’t say no, those with the right amount of usefulness, awesomeness and uniqueness, you know what I’m talking about.

The Panoramas SAPO project was one of those moments. When Basílio and Pedro came to us and the thought of making a record Tera pixel panoramic photo of Lisbon took shape, we sank our energy and resources into the project and put up an elite team working together in no time.

Here’s a story by this guy who enjoys a good hack, crazy for all things tech vintage, who needed a new computer. He wanted a new OSX based system, he decided to build his own. Yes, it’s yet another hackintosh how to guide and yes, it’s me.

I have a ton of Appleish gear in my life. You name the device, I probably have it. Call me a fanboy if you need to. From where I stand, I’m just someone with a strong Unix background (never really used anything else since I quit the Amiga back in the 90s), a desktop Linux user since the slackware distro, and a sucker for great operating systems that help me do my job most efficiently. My most used and important productivity tool is the command line prompt, undoubtedly. About a decade ago, I quit Gnome and my Debian laptop, gave a try to OSX and bought a Powerbook G4 laptop and never looked back ever since.

É público e sabido que eu sou um grande tarado por relíquias informáticas. Fui um orgulhoso dono e utilizador obsessivo e compulsivo de uma mão cheia de pérolas que já só fazem parte do imaginário geek da minha geração, e uns quase 30 anos depois continuo a lembrar-me com saudades desses loucos e indiscritíveis tempos. A prova disso é que na mesma sala aonde escrevo este texto estou rodeado de um Commodore 64 e um Commodore Amiga 1200, completamente operacionais (montados e ligados à televisão) e de uma réplica de uma Arcade Machine.

Costa Vicentina, Portugal, Quad Bike Ride

A couple of years ago I bought a quad bike for fun and pleasure to play around the beautiful southwest coast of Portugal, more precisely the Costa Vicentina, near Aljezur where I own a house. Years passed through and between less visits to the southwest, a busier life, kids and other hobbies, I had temporarily forgotten how amazing the experience can be.

Recently I bought a goPro camera, great device, and a bunch of accessories to go with it too. Independentemente da profissão e do percurso das pessoas eu tenho por princípio nutrir uma grande admiração por todos aqueles que conseguem alcançar o sucesso profissional em Portugal. Estas pessoas têm que ser excepcionais a muitos níveis: não só na sua área de especialidade, mas também na determinação, resistência e na garra que têm que ter para conseguirem ultrapassar tantas barreiras.

Cheguei à conclusão que Portugal é um dos raros países do mundo que consegue condenar o fracasso e o sucesso ao mesmo tempo, o que é obra. O fracasso é culturalmente marcante e o sucesso é politicamente penalizado. De uma forma ou de outra o indivíduo que sair dos padrões da aceitação económica ou social predominantes deste país vai sempre levar no pêlo.

Os jovens deviam ter a ambição de serem pessoas cheias de crenças, mas ao invés constato que a tendência passa muito pelo inverso: as grandes preocupações da actualidade são a consensualidade, a aceitação, o estatuto. Deixem-se dizer-vos o que é que eu penso de pessoas consensuais: são desinteressantes, tipicamente nunca fizeram nada de jeito na vida e aborrecem-me muito, dão-me literalmente sono.

Entre tempos livres e pensamentos que me ocorrem, ando há umas semanas a rabiscar uns textos sobre este Portugal aonde habitamos. Fi-lo para minha própria referência, porque gosto e porque acho que a escrita é um excelente instrumento de preservação do que nos vai na alma durante vários contextos da nossa vida.

Decidi que vou partilhar este ensaio neste blog por dois motivos. Primeiro porque a ocasião é propícia pois vivemos tempos de contestação e de reflexão como há muito não me recordo, e segundo tenho um genuíno interesse em provocar reacções a algumas destas ideias e pode ser que consiga obter algumas, espero que sim.

Dava-se o ano de 1986, mais coisa menos coisa, contas feitas de cabeça, tinha eu uns 14 anos e passava na rádio um programa de características muito invulgares que me agarrava à aparelhagem de som dos meus pais numa obsessão semanal digna de um caso de estudo sobre doenças adolescentes.

Todas as semanas, ao Sábado ou ao Domingo à noite, não consigo precisar, passava numa rádio nacional um concurso dedicado aos amantes do famigerado e popular ZX Spectrum. Durante alguns minutos o locutor calava-se e na sua vez ouvia-se o ruído estridente de um programa de ZX Spectrum a passar nas ondas radiofónicas do país. Sim, esta barulheira era o que qualquer ouvinte teria que suportar se sintonizasse a estação nesse momento.

Acabou.

O fim do Codebits é sempre, ano após ano, um misto de satisfação e tristeza. Satisfação porque correu muito bem e porque nos orgulhamos de ter proporcionado três dias inesquecíveis aos participantes do evento, mas também tristeza porque o que é bom não devia acabar assim tão bruscamente, parece que morreu alguém. Este evento provoca-nos a todos uma espécie de distúrbio bipolar a oscilar entre a hiperactividade criativa e satisfação extrema, e uma quase depressão nostálgica que é estranha, porque só acabou ontem mas parece que foi há mais tempo, porque já temos saudades.

Impressiona-me como é que os organismos públicos e os seus representantes gastam tanta energia com a discussão, com a análise, com o debate político no fundo em vez de canalizarem esses recursos todos, essa vitalidade, para a execução. Hoje com 36 anos eu já entendo, com alguma dificuldade é certo, que a política é menos um programa de computador e mais um jogo de poker. Há analistas em excesso e executivos em défice. Em Portugal ser político é assim mais ou menos como se um jogador de futebol tivesse a obrigação profissional de comentar os seus próprios jogos para além de maximizar o seu rendimento físico para marcar golos.

Inadvertidamente descobri uma pequena API do Facebook, utilizada no wizard de estimativas de publicidade do serviço que permite fazer todo o tipo de queries demográficos à base de dados de utilizadores do Facebook. Decidi queimar 1 hora e fazer um script para extrair os dados. Eis as estatísticas para Portugal:

Há já algum tempo que os clientes ADSL da PT são “brindados” com um número VoIP (ou numeração 30, se preferirem).

Na configuração mais típica o cliente tem tudo configurado no router em casa e só tem que ligar o velho telefone analógio na parte de trás para usufruir do novo número.

Para os mais internautas o SAPO oferece aos utilizadores de windows um cliente de messaging que agrega IM e VoIP na mesma aplicação e aonde também podem utilizar o serviço no PC, é o SAPO Messenger.

Há umas semanas fez-se uma reunião histórica lá no trabalho, a primeira de uma série de tantas para começar a preparar um evento que na minha opinião entrará directo para a história dos momentos SAPO: a transmissão de um jogo de futebol importante ao vivo na Internet, neste caso o Benfica/Nápoles. A oportunidade fez parte de um pacote mais abrangente que incluiu o lançamento do canal Benfica, que como sabem é um exclusivo do Meo, com a sua primeira emissão ao vivo.

O nome da versão tuga do classmate de 2ª geração da Intel (review) é no mínimo estranho para um computador orientado para miúdos dos 6 aos 10 anos. Magalhães é… sim, estranho. Não sei quem foi o consultor ou a agência que fez o estudo, ou se a ideia surgiu espontaneamente numa reunião de ministros numa pausa entre a criação dumas leis mas pronto, acho-o pouco “kiddie friendly” (Mobo Kids é bem mais giro), faz-me lembrar os bonecos do Professor Baltazar (arrepios).

Quem roçar na minha geração sabe o que é um salão de máquinas de arcade. Sabe, se for uma pessoa normal e dentro do target deste blog, certamente, como é passar intervalos ou uma tarde livre de aulas (ou não) fechado num salão agarrado a um Bubble Bobble, Shinobi, New Zealand Story ou Rainbow Islands, só para mencionar alguns. Sabe o que é ser expulso dos salões por ainda não ter idade para os frequentar, sabe o que é poupar no lanche para gastar na jogatana, sabe jogar snooker e setas, sabe truques e maroscas e enganar o responsável do salão de jogos e sabe, acima de tudo, escrever o nome completo com apenas 3 letras e com orgulho.

Update 1: Por coincidência o TechCrunch tem hoje um artigo precisamente sobre a oportunidade de usar uma infra-estrutura como o XMPP para suportar um Twitter “bem feito”.

Update 2: Um bom artigo do Mickaël Rémond da Process-one sobre a utilização do XMPP e do pubsub num serviço do tipo Twitter/micro-blogging.

Update 3: A malta do Psi também anda a fazer umas brincadeiras com estes conceitos (via Melo).

Durante anos, na relação que tenho com certos e determinados operadores móveis (o plural é só para confundir, faz de conta que os MVNOs também contam vá), defendi que o Instant Messaging não tem interesse absolutamente nenhum num telefone móvel. Não tem interesse porque todas as pessoas neste País têm um telemóvel (ou vários) e estão permanentemente ligados, a maior parte durante a noite inclusive. Os portugueses estão permanentemente disponíveis com o telemóvel, é seguro dizer. E portanto colocar uma aplicação de IM no telefone acrescenta o quê em relação ao SMS que é praticamente gratuito e que possivelmente funciona na mais bem trabalhada aplicação nativa que qualquer aparelho pode trazer? Informação de presença não é. Nada, não há absolutamente nada de relevante no IM no telemóvel a não ser uma ligeira sensação efémere de que estamos na crista da onda a falar com os amigos do PC num teclado de 9 teclas. E então quando me falavam de tarifários a cobrar à mensagem…

Ok, alguém me vai matar por isto amanhã. Mas estive a ponderar e sinto que há legitimidade para tornar este vídeo público: Primeiro porque tenho créditos, muitos créditos, no que diz respeito a expor situações embaraçosas dos meus queridos colegas e amigos de trabalho. Segundo porque já lá vão mais de 4 anos, e todos sabem que na Internet 4 anos são na realidade 12, é muito tempo.

Este vídeo representa um marco na cultura interna do SAPO. Foi o nosso primeiro mega-projecto, que envolveu tempo, recursos e custos consideráveis para essa altura. Tratou-se de construir a nova plataforma toda baseada em produtos Opensouce (ie: Qmail, Horde, Debian Linux, etc, etc.) e que viria a suportar o E-Mail da Telepac e do próprio SAPO, e que ainda hoje existe.

Ontem lançámos o SAPO Cabo Verde. A sensação de ter um SAPO fora de Portugal é no mínimo estranha, é um misto de orgulho e de medo, em que a segunda das sensações advém certamente do facto de nunca termos pensado muito nisto, na hipótese de actuarmos fora do rectângulo. É o tal síndroma que nos persegue, aos Portugueses em geral, para aí desde o tempo em que deixámos de pensar que somos grandes. O projecto já cozinhava há uns largos meses. Não vou aqui discutir nem as razões nem os objectivos, alguém o fará por mim, vou só falar de tecnologia. Tecnologicamente falando, instanciar o SAPO fora de Picoas foi um desafio muito interessante. Uma coisa é escalarmos dentro do mesmo Datacenter mas outra coisa é sair do útero, distribuir conteúdos em pontos do globo distintos e distantes e reutilizar a mesma tecnologia mas em contextos diferentes e com características diferentes da nossa realidade mantendo ao mesmo tempo uma arquitectura global.

À medida que a minha vida profissional vai evoluindo (discutível, é uma expressão forte, eu sei) vou eu perdendo cada vez mais uma série de características cuja memória de as ter já remonta para aí a uma década atrás, nomeadamente: concentração, organização, memória, foco, etc.. O meu dia a dia agora é conseguir fazer uma balança o mais eficaz e inteligente possível entre o que esperam de mim e o que eu espero de mim mesmo. Não me queixo, dá-me gozo, mas não é fácil. Também se fosse… Já lá vão os dias em que a gestão do meu tempo e das minhas prioridades era feita sem o auxílio de ferramentas, tranquilamente. Hoje não dá mesmo.

I wanted to play with flare, a flash based visualization library (also based in the prefuse visualization toolkit) I discovered in eTech. I despise Eclipse and IDEs in general so I aimed for a free, command line + Textmate based environment. This is how I got it working. Not that it’s hard, but here it is in writing to avoid common pitfalls (talk about niche posts).

Note 1: I have no experience with Actionscript, Flash or Flex.

A visualização de dados fascina-me. Quando acrescentamos perspectiva a dados aparentemente unidimensionais, seja através de um vídeo ou de uma imagem, ou de som, ou quando da mesma forma correlacionamos duas fontes de informação e lhes damos “vida” então criamos uma obra de arte. E a arte é conseguir surpreender o espectador com uma representação impensável e espectacular daquilo que para nós não passam de dados crus, logfiles, eventos isolados, database dumps, “terminal stuff”.

Esta é a minha visão sobre toda esta história da televisão terreste em Portugal e na Europa. Espero contribuir com alguma informação e lucidez, mesmo que em alguns pontos seja apenas a minha opinião, que vale o que vale, claro seja.A televisão digital terreste (TDT, ou DTT) é uma uma plataforma de difusão digital do sinal de televisão e vai substituir as actuais emissões analógicas. Algumas das vantagens mais claras e directas para o consumidor são uma melhor qualidade da imagem e de serviço, a possibilidade de ter canais em HD, mais canais, dispensa a antena no telhado (o equipamento terminal e receptor pode estar todo dentro de casa, até pode ser uma coisa destas).Mas a DTT é também, e acima de tudo, um passo gigante no que diz respeito a aproveitar melhor os recursos radioeléctricos, vulgo espectro, uma vez que é possível ter mais canais de televisão e com mais qualidade, utilizando menos gamas de frequências do que a plataforma analógica. Com esta transição vai-se libertar muito espectro. Estas frequências que vão ficar livres são muito valiosas porque são “premium”, têm muita capacidade de propagação e conseguem entrar bem dentro das casas e dos edifícios. Mais sobre isto à frente.O switch-off da televisão analógica em Portugal e na Europa está previsto para 2012, 3 anos depois dos E.U.A. A data foi estabelecida pela comissão Europeia para todos os países membros. Até lá terá que ocorrer a transição para digital em que se prevê também um periodo de adaptação dos consumidores às novas ofertas de TDT Freeview ou pagas (ie: aquisição de setop boxes ou aparelhos adaptadores, começou agora nos E.U.A.).

Back in the Tiger days, Quartz Composer had few support for network sources. The RSS feed patch was pretty much the only way we had to read data from the net, but it was way too limited (no streaming, not event based, not extendable, no input or output triggers).

I needed a way to get data from the Network in the form of events that I could reuse in a quartz composition. So our resident mac programmer coded this custom made patch based on sparse non official documentation found on the internet. And it worked great. We have about 5 plasma screens with mac minis over at work running it for months, no problems whatsoever.

I’m a huge fan of Amazon. The way they turned just a successful book selling platform into one of the coolest internet companies and teams in the world, fighting head to head with Google, Yahoo and MS in the innovation and services playground is nothing to disdain. If you’re a geek, you’ll know Amazon better from AWS, FPS, EC2 and S3 than, hum.. books.

I really think Amazon has a great vision of what the future of computing resources will be, and they’re shaping it, silently and cleverly.

Ao tornarem-se páginas web em aplicações assíncronas, perde-se a tradicional noção de actividade através animação do browser (vulgo “E” do IE a rodar, ou spinwheel no Safari, ou o que quer que o tema do Firefox tenha).

Assim sendo, com o advento do Ajax, chegou também a praga das spin-wheels nas páginas. Foi a resposta óbvia, com inspiração gráfica no Safari, para o problema da falta de feedback que o UI deixou de dar ao utilizador quando a página está a “carregar”. E de certa forma tornou-se numa norma para os sites modernos.

Que dia é hoje ? Não interessa, mas é um bom dia. É o dia em que um dos mais fascinantes projectos do SAPO dos últimos tempos deu à luz, só para usar a metáfora do papá.

O bicho está mesmo bem feito. E acreditem que não foi fácil. Esta obra de engenharia funciona como um relógio suíço em Firefox, Safari, IE6/7 e Opera. Até funciona no Safari do iMighty vejam lá bem, dizem por aí.

Há muito tempo atrás deixei aqui uma pérola da Mediamarkt. Há uns dias fui lá novamente comprar já não sei bem o quê, e dei com outra que merece destaque.

Ponto um, não é “a Sapo”, é “o SAPO”. Tudo bem que o batráquio dos anúncios não tem pilinha mas mesmo assim, e a julgar pela quantidade de modelos que atrai, parece-me macho o suficiente.

Após muitas semanas de preparação e o envolvimento e empenho de muitas pessoas eis que por fim estamos em condições de confirmar e divulgar o primeiro evento do SAPO completamente dedicado a programadores, hackers e webdesigners, ou genericamente falando talento de Internet em Portugal.

A inspiração no formato do Yahoo! Hackday é óbvia e é justo referi-la. O conceito apaixonou-nos desde o primeiro dia e tem tudo a ver connosco, e portanto tornou-se claro que iríamos fazer o possível e o impossível para tornar o sonho numa realidade. E cá está.

It has no frakng 801.2X support. This means no corporate Wifi and in no transparent authentication in some public Wifi networks.
Again public Wifi networks. I think Apple should look into this carefully because it’s all about ease of use and commodity. What’s the point on having a gorgeous transition between GPRS/EDGE and Wifi if I’ll be stuck in a crippled Hotspot HTML page to logon ? The Wifi alliance has some recommendations for smart clients (using meta information on the hotstop webpages) to automate the authentication process. You should look into this.

Geohot’s accomplishment is all over the web my now so I won’t comment on it any further but this MSNBC live interview with him is worth watching. George is an remarkable hardware guy but above all, it’s his motivation and his ethics that are worth mentioning. He’s a true hacker.

I and a few friends actually followed the whole story on IRC live, when he wrote the step-by-step tutorial on the Blog. In fact, we were so intoxicated with the story, that we decided to do an unlocking marathon later at my place. The result was a disaster, do not attempt to do this unless you’re a soldering expert, really (see this pic for a good idea on the size of these circuit tracks). I’ve modded a few consoles in the past and I was very confident but what I saw was insane. And by the way opening the iPhone wasn’t easy too. So we were stuck in step 3 and wen’t back to the drawing board. Idiots. We have a video of this, I’ll edit it and post it soon, for your amusement.

I told you rfc2397 was good for offline storage didn’t I ? Here’s a program (source) that generates two bookmarks. Each of those are actually javascript programs customized with your PT-WIFI credentials.

Bottom line, you can save these bookmarks on your iPhone’s Safari browser and once you have PT-WIFI coverage you’re one-click away to instant log on. No more clumsy, painful web redirects or forms to fill in. Very handy.

Once you get the idea, you can make your own version for your local WIFI operator.

I just joined the club of those in Portugal who have an iPhone and can actually talk about it, sort of.

This is not a review, I’m tired of pointless opinions about the device. No matter how many defects you find, this toy is truly amazing stuff, specially the software and the OSX foundations.

STILL, the one only thing that really pisses me off is that it does not support 802.1X. So for now, forget about seamless authentication on many WIFI networks, including some public nationwide soon-to-have ones. I really hate having to go through those webpage redirects to get logged in.

rfc2397 and the iPhone

This is me using rfc2397. It will work if you’re on >Firefox2, Opera or Safari3 and IE7 if you install this plugin. Won’t work with IE6, like if anyone with this virus would visit my Blog.

What’s the point of this and what’s the relation to iPhone ?

Here at SAPO we recently struggled to get a way to dynamically generate inline images on a web page, in all browsers. And it’s not for the faint of heart. I’ve lost the status of this effort with our js guru but I know we all wished IE7 supported data:. But Redmond’s code monkeys are hopeless when it comes to standards.

If you live in Germany, from today on you might just get arrested for making an Hacker Tool. And pretty much anything call fall into this category, even “ping -f” functionality could get ping’s author into trouble. Amazing.

But don’t get too amazed, in Portugal a very similar law was introduced recently. It came and was approved so smoothly and so under the radar that it makes me think about the whole law approval process in Portugal, the lobbyists, and how people are disconnected and uninterested in politics. Or at least until they take on our basic liberty principles, like this is the case, but then it’s too late. And that’s generally the point when Portuguese complaint, like me.

Bought the iWoz book in London last weekend and read it all during my trip to Seattle (more on this later, I promise). The book is sort of a biography from Steve Wozniak, his relationships and life, entrepreneurship, and a big emphasis on the Apple I and the Apple creation.

The book is as easy reading as it gets, and because of the simple and sincere way Woz exposes his personal fears and secrets it’s really passionate reading for geeks of all ages. Plus it has so many parallels and similarities with myself and my still young career and life and what I went through, yes, including the Phone phreaking part, if that’s what you’re wondering.

Today, a particularly stressful day at work, a came across several E-Mail and IM threads about Google Gears with my friends and colleagues. I finally had the time to look into it more seriously and I feel I should point out that I don’t share the global excitement everyone seems to suffer from.

Google Gears anticipates what browsers should have already and clones what Zimbra envisioned months ago, I fail to understand the wow effect, really. I had that wow when Zimbra demoed the concept over at eTech 2007. Sure, it’s Opensource, and works with almost all platform combinations, and I’m not saying it isn’t neat either, but stop the presses please, what about these questions ?

SAPO Messenger for Mac, Public Beta

Everybody knows Yahoo is doing it’s European version of Hackday in London in early June. I’ve seen Yahoo’s presentation about the US version on eTech and it clicked on me. It’s a great idea for a variety of reasons: Team and company morale boost, tell the outside world what you have, image building amongst the developers community, a great way to find new talent and eventually recruit some, a free test-bed for your infra-structure and APIs, and a great environment for new ideas. And of course not less important, it’s a lot of fun for everybody too, it’s win-win.

So don’t ask how (or why) but I got my hands on the Apple TV for a week now. Much has been said about this cute living room apple fruit, but maybe the hacker’s perspective hasn’t gone into much analysis yet. Hacking was the trigger for me. I wasn’t convinced by the iLife sync stuff nor the HDMI output, but the enormous list of hacks during the first week, while I was in San Diego, clicked on me. It was just too hackable not to have it, or, in the words of the Maker’s owner manifesto: “If you can’t open it, you don’t own it”.

There’s an emerging technology in illumination: Led lamps. LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) have been around for ages, first used massively in the early electronics age, then applied to many decorative solutions, now they’re being used to provide mass market illumination products AKA ordinary lamps!.

LED’s advantages in a nutshell are very low power consumption (2-3 watts), very low heat (the energy is almost all transformed into light), very long life (10 years) and a unique kind of light that incandescent, fluorescent or halogen lamps can’t produce.

You realize you’re a complete idiot for not having a backup at all (you had to delete the other one because you needed the space for MAME roms).
You find the real value of storing all your E-Mail on an IMAP server.
You realize you should have the Sent folder on IMAP too.
You find that your old Powerbook G4, now restored from scratch, is still a great machine to work with for next year, and therefore you save a bunch of money.
You take the chance to renew and clean your RSS subscriptions, which you never had time to.
During your quest to recover documents from your “IMAP disk-drive” you’ll find the most stupid things you believed in a couple of years ago. Makes you laugh, for a change.
Keychain is great, but the low risk of fire or earthquakes still makes the good old paper an excellent alternative for storing passwords or secure notes (crying now).
You’ll find the coolest Mac software you never bothered to check out before.
You buy and actually use a backup utility until the drama is fresh.

Yes, it all happened to me. The freaking drive is as dead as it gets. I’ve tried everything, Disk Warrior, Data Rescue II, dd_rescude and dd_rhelp on Linux (which are great by the way, don’t spend money on cute UIs, get a 2.5″ to 3.5″ HD cable and connect your drive to a Linux, dd_rhelp rocks. USB/IDE adaptors won’t work well because most times the driver will disconnect the faulty device) but no help. Managed to recover 240 Megs out of 80 Gigs and suddenly the HD collapsed from block 0 to the last.

Há uma nova geração de Web Developers. Chegaram de fininho sem ninguém dar por eles. Fazem coisas fantásticas e surpreendentes sem precisarem de saber uma linha de Perl ou PHP, não podiam ser mais apáticas em relação às guerras dos Windows vs Linux, mal saberão o que é o “bash” ou o “vi“, na sua maioria subcontratam a infra-estrutura aos amigos que percebem da coisa, os amigos mais velhos, os que sabem o que é o “vi”. Eles andem aí em Portugal e é de louvar, admirar e aprender com eles.

Do not trust anyone. Everyone’s fighting for their big chunk of an easy audience and quick fame, at any cost. Don’t bet your bucks on that good old trusty brand; you’ll get burned or fooled or both. The Internet is going through the same process public TVs had when competition arrived (think TVI if you live in Portugal).

I see the most absurd news and theories every day. Being a relatively well informed IT guy, I read all my RSS feeds at the end of the day, and I find myself laughing most of the time. This whole “Ajaxified Web 2 bubble, Google is god don’t argue, let’s criticize the present and predict the future because we have a vision and have read the Web 2 meme map from Tim” thing has just gone too ridiculous. The extreme example of this madness is perhaps this Googleness about everything. OK, the company is a huge success, that’s a fact. They have a very well oiled and productive service factory, that’s a fact. They’re user-centric and scratched all their strategy (and mission) on top of that. They’re smart, IQ smart, I mean.

XCode2 first steps

I just tried to compile speirs’s Fotobilder iPhoto Plugin to use a modified version of our internal (SAPO’s) API, and translate it to Portuguese. So I downloaded the beta from XCode2.2 and gave it try.

The last time I used a graphical IDE was on the glorious Amiga days, with the famous SAS/C compiler. I long adopted the trusty portable gnu utils/bash/gnumake/vi IDE. So I was relutant.

But XCode is beautiful. Apart for not being able to use “vi” decently, it just rocks. Without reading a single document or book, just out of common sense and knowledge I was able to install it XCode, the needed extra packages and frameworks, get the source code from speir’s SVN, change the target for 10.4, edit the widgets to Portuguese, compile everything and run the program.

That’s right. Like cellphones, the iPod has long entered the accessories scam market. In fact, the iPod it self is not even Apple’s big profit but instead the economy that lives around it. Proof of it is that the accessory count as reach 1000! GIM aka Google Talk is Out and working

It’s old news for Internet standards but Google Talk has opened their server (not the service yet).

Enough to confirm it’s XMPP/Jabber. I was able to use my Gmail account both with Psi, iChat and AdiumX (libgaim based so all clients based on GAIM should work).

Works with plain 5222 connections but you need TLS (Gaim clients and iChat support that)
Works with SSL 5223 with any client, including Psi.
You need to set “allow plain passwords” if your client has that option.
S2S seems closed for the moment and no DNS SRV records are available for google.com, gmail,com or talk.gmail.com yet.
No agents or components can be found while browsing (disco, agents or browse) for any of those domains.

Well it’s out and lots of question have been answered both with the availability of the service and with a minimalist Developers FAQ on the site.

In a nutshell:

S2S and DNS SRV records are turned off. They don’t clarify if they’re going to open them, many speculate they will. For now they ask us to send them an E-Mail asking for federation. I did and received an Automatic reply with a ticket ID.
When we invite a friend to GMail from our account, regardless of it’s E-Mail domain (initially I thought It would happen to .com contacts), it’s added to the XMPP roster. This is weird because they don’t have XMPP S2S open yet so I can’t IM them. But it’s the proof Gmail has a strong unified contact list engine behind the scenes.
There’s a group for Google Talk discussions available.
There’s some people asking for Asterisk’s native protocol IAX too.
The VoIP/SIP people is wondering if they’re going to use ENUM which would open the service further and contribute for interoperability.
There are rumours that iChat could do voice call to Google Talk. Not true. Hoax.
There’s no offline messages support. Rather than that, Google’s client uses GMail’s Webmail to send an E-Mail to your offline buddies.
VoIP implementation and relationship with XMPP as not yet been reverse engineered but it’s on many people’s TODO.list, including mine.
Just crossed my mind that if you want, you now have a very easy and well documented API to authenticate Gmail E-mail’s credentials.
As you would expect from using XMPP you can logon with as many clients as you want (tried two) with the same account at the same time.
People talked to me about Google Desktop integration but I haven’t checked.
File transfers and avatars are not supported by Google’s client yet, so no JEP adoption advocacy for now
Google’s client uses JEP-0115 to query/inform the other peer’s client capabilities and reports the “voice-v1″ capability.
Google’s client doesn’t respond to disco queries.
Google’s client doesn’t send or react to jabber:x:event messages.

Segundo o semanário “Expresso” deste fim de semana o actual governo prepara-se para fazer uma parceria com os CTT e no âmbito do “Choque/Plano tecnológico” dar um E-Mail a todos os cidadãos portugueses. O racional começa por ser o uso da Internet como meio privilegiado de contacto com os contribuintes como um instrumento de combate à fraude e à evasão fiscal (já se viu que a entrega electrónica do IRS é um sucesso) mas admite-se um uso mais abrangente, afinal de contas é um simples E-Mail na rede pública Internet. Fala-se também em certificação/garantia de recepção e entrega e mais, caso a mensagem não seja lida electronicamente é entregue fisicamente pelos CTT.

Alguém me consegue explicar porque é que este povo lusitano, quando viaja de avião (normalmente quando o faz em bloco), bate palmas quando o aparelho aterra ? Decerto que o tema já foi amplamente debatido mas eu não estou esclarecido e isto faz-me espécie… Ora vejamos:

Não deve ser pela competência técnica do piloto nem pela perfeição ou elegância da aterragem. Não me parece que hajam grandes conhecedores da matéria a bordo. E para além disso já ouvi palmas nas aterragens suaves e nas mais turbulentas, com bom ou mau clima, em pistas difíceis ou fáceis.
Há um certo efeito viral nesta coisa. O problema por vezes reside no elo mais fraco que desata a bater palmas. Dá-me a sensação de que se ninguém tomar a iniciativa, não acontece nada. Posso estar enganado. Esse elo mais fraco é muitas vezes também o engraçadinho que sabe que a parvoíce vai pegar se ele der o mote. Há também uma dose de palhaçada na coisa.
É um fenómeno claramente associado à classe turística. Em executiva não há lá disto… com tanta frequência.

Impressões gerais sobre a Madeira: Desenvolvida, Excelentes acessos e infra-estruturas em qualquer canto da ilha, túneis em barda. Qualquer monte por mais pequeno que seja, justifica um. Há quem diga que até são demais, que a ilha já parece um queijo suíço. Vias rápidas e estradas secundárias em número mais do que suficiente. Gente afável e aparentemente trabalhadora, moldados pelas suas origens e percursos na vida, muitos são retornados. Mistela de línguas e raças nas ruas, em certos sítios é difícil ouvir falar-se Português ou até encontra-los. Nitidamente a Madeira é orientada para o turismo e na minha ignorância arrisco conjecturar que é dependente dele. Boa gastronomia. Linda. Grande. Diversificada desde o mar verde e quente do lado sul, às cascatas, montanhas, picos, escarpas com teleféricos assustadores, cabos, campos, vales, florestas e jardins, piscinas naturais, vilas históricas, levadas…

Por circunstâncias essencialmente casuais hoje estive presente na conferência intitulada “Plano Tecnológico” promovida pelo Diário Económico no Pestana Palace Hotel em Lisboa. Tão casuais que não imaginei quando saí de casa que viesse a destacar-me (orgulhosamente, note-se) como o único desengravatado da audiência. Mas confesso que fui também com alguma dose de curiosidade ao encontro. Quando a bandeira de campanha do partido agora no governo é um “Choque Tecnológico” para salvar a economia do País, sendo a minha actividade profissional e os meus interesses pessoais fortemente ligados à tecnologia e à inovação e tendo eu acompanhado muito de perto estas guerras nos últimos dez anos de actividade sempre queria ver se hoje entendia como é que nos vão chocar. Mas não… A conferência foi do meu ponto de vista, e como já devem ter percebido pelo meu tom de discurso, uma feira de vaidade cheia de altas individualidades ligadas a instituições governamentais, empresariais e de ensino, num habitat mediático, formal, congestionado com fotógrafos, conselheiros, câmaras de televisão e equipas de reportagem. My Mac Mini just arrived at work. I asked for a 512 Meg RAM model and the “limited” local dealer sent me the Mini box, an Apple keyboard and a generic compatible 512 Meg RAM module for me to fit in. At first I thought they were just too lazy or costumer careless to plug the RAM for me but after my first attempt to open the beautiful silver cube I quickly realized that there was a very good reason for it. The darned cube is as hard to open as the AAC DRM format, maybe harder (couldn’t resist sorry). After digging the net for some hacker’s experiences I also realized that either I needed:

Brutal. Peguem na experiência mais aventurosa que tiveram (para um indivíduo que se situe dentro dos padrões standard da normalidade, claro seja), multipliquem por dez e não vão chegar nem perto à sensação que eu tive ao saltar de paraquedas de um Cessna com a cabine aberta a 4000 pés de altitude pela primeira vez…

O curso de abertura automática da Blue Emotions já tinha começado há umas semanas atrás num dia nublado e ventoso e só ontem é que as condições meteorológicas proporcionaram a realização da parte prática. iChat and XMPP/Jabber

Well it’s weekend and I decided to waste some time on something cool (“waste” is not exactly the term as working with Jabber is part of my professional activity, but I sure could find something more useful on my top_pri_todo_lst.txt, but not as fun).

Ok 29 of April has finally arrived, Tiger was unleashed and I just love it. One of the most exciting new features is iChat support for the Jabber protocol (aka XMPP). Since XMPP support was announced on Tiger a few months ago, I’ve been most curious on how would they implement it and which JEPs would they support, if any.
